Competence is the ability to do something successfully or efficiently. It means we can do something well.
Having competence means having adequate knowledge and skills to carry out a task. Competence on a task means having the ability to think and behave that will lead to the successful execution of that task.

When we develop competence in areas important to us, the benefits will include:
- Having greater levels of confidence.
- Completing tasks quicker or more efficiently.
- Making fewer mistakes which means we need less time to finish a task.
- Lower chance of compromising our safety.

What is Perspective?
Perspective is our point of view. It’s the way we see the world or give meaning to what’s happening around us.
Learning to use our perspective wisely is the ability to take ourselves out of our experience and see it differently. It’s allowing ourselves to consider something or a situation from another person’s point of view.
This can be helpful when experiencing a conflict or disagreement with someone. During the conflict, it’s common to only see things from our point of view and wanting to be right.
The ability to see their side is how we can use our perspective to create a new experience.
The Advantages of Changing Your Perspective
Learning to change or use our perspective differently has many advantages. These include:
- Staying open to different ideas.
- Learning new things about those we interact with.
- Creating new or better experiences.
- Having a better attitude or mood.
- Becoming an adaptable and flexible person.
As we practice using our perspective during everyday experiences, we’ll manage our mental and emotional states a lot better.

What Does it Mean to Be More Grounded?
From an energetic perspective, being grounded means we’re connected to our source energy. It means we’re connected to the Earth and have a sense or knowing we’re protected.
Despite what may be going on externally, we feel safe, centred and at ease with everything around us.
At a deeper level, being grounded refers to our mental and emotional states. It’s how we choose to be. It’s a way of being.
When we’re more grounded, we’re secure and stable internally, which will reflect how we operate externally. A key to being more grounded is knowing when we’re not.
Signs You Are Not Grounded
There are things we can pay attention to that indicate we’re not grounded. These signs can include:
- Getting triggered by events we cannot change or control.
- Finding it difficult to concentrate on tasks at hand.
- Feeling fatigued constantly.
- Having poor quality sleep.
- Experiencing discomfort, pain or inflammation.
- Feeling spaced out and distracted.
- Having a deep urge to reconnect with our body or do something physical.
- Worrying about things unnecessarily which can cause anxiety.
- Having difficulty communicating what’s on our mind.
- Unable to remain present and be in the “now.”
When we notice these signs, it should be a trigger to change our mental and emotional states.

Even though it sounds like a simple idea, it’s an area we can easily let ourselves down in. It’s an area I’ve failed in many times, therefore I’m always evaluating how I can improve.
What Does Keeping Your Word Mean?
Keeping your word means doing what you say you’ll do. It’s agreeing to follow through on a commitment.
We can think of it as a verbal contract between two people. If we give our word the same level of importance as a written contract, it will be easier to do what we’ve agreed to.
Why Do We Struggle to Keep Our Word?
We often forget how powerful our words are and not follow through on something we’ve committed to. Reasons we struggle to keep our word include:
- We’re not intentional about the words we use.
- We forget what we’ve said or agreed to.
- We’re unaware we’ve agreed to something.
- We’re unwilling to renegotiate what we’ve committed to.
- We don’t want to do what we said we would do.
- We over-commit ourselves and not allow enough time to do what we said we would.
- We shift our attention to something else without understanding the implications of our commitments.
When we pay more attention to the words we use and what we’re committing to, keeping our word will not be an issue.
Knowing how to develop persistence can be the difference between achieving something we want or not.
Whenever we pursue anything meaningful or worthwhile in life, we will face obstacles, setbacks, and even experience failures. How we deal with them determines if we’re persistent.
What is Persistence?
Persistence is the ability to continue taking action towards what we want, despite challenges or struggles. It’s what separates those who are interested in achieving something they want and those who commit to achieving it.
The journey to success can include various setbacks, ridicule, criticism, humiliation or disappointments. How we deal with them determines how persistent we are and if we’ll eventually achieve success.
Why is it Important to Develop Persistence?
Persistence is important because it:
- Tests our level of commitment.
- Supports us in gaining greater levels of clarity.
- Helps us become mentally stronger.
- Allows us to focus on what’s most important.
- Causes us to make better decisions and take more intelligent actions.
The stronger our ability to remain persistent, the greater our chances of eventually achieving what’s important.
When we have a high intention to achieve something we want, with no attachment to it, we can achieve it faster.
The starting point to achieve anything new is a desire or an intention. The stronger our desire or intention, the more energy we’ll give to achieve it.
A high intention can be the difference between achieving something we want or not.
What Does Having High Intention Mean?
Having a high intention means we’ve defined what we want and are emotionally connected to it. It’s having the awareness and the commitment to do what’s required to achieve our goal.
We can make things difficult for ourselves if we have a high intention for something with an attachment to it. Sometimes, constantly striving and becoming obsessed about what we want, in an unhealthy way, can slow down our progress.
The ideal situation is to have a high intention to achieve our goal, but have a low attachment to it.
This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t care or take action to achieve our goal. It means we don’t have to focus on our goal obsessively. We have to learn to trust we’ll achieve our goal at the right time.
The Different Stages of Intention and Attachment
- High Intention / High Attachment. This is when we’re constantly striving and pushing ourselves. It can lead to mental and physical exhaustion or burnout.
- High Intention / Low Attachment. This is when we’re doing what’s required to achieve our goal, but we don’t make mean anything about us. If we fall short or don’t achieve our goal, we know we did the best we could. If we achieve our goal, we can celebrate the win and be satisfied with our efforts.
- Low Intention / High Attachment. This is where we want to achieve something, but don’t take the necessary actions to achieve it. This often generates unhealthy emotions when we don’t achieve our goal.
- Low Intention / Low Attachment. This is where we don’t have goals or aren’t clear about what we want, therefore we do nothing new. Since we don’t know what we want, we achieve nothing of significance in our lives.
Our ability to have a high intention and a low attachment to what we want will make us progress faster.
