My teenage years were a struggle. I was fifteen years of age when I emigrated to Australia from the Fiji Islands. Having to adjust to a new way of life and a new schooling system was challenging. It took me close to three years to finally feel settled and comfortable with life again.

There were many times during that period when I just hated everything about life. I was angry, felt isolated, unmotivated and directionless. It affected my ability to do well at school, which also affected my confidence.

It was only after I started attending university that things started to change. Even though I had enrolled in a course I didn’t enjoy, I started learning more about myself and what was possible. Being in an environment that was community-focused and supportive helped me gain a new perspective on life.

There are things that can be done if life is challenging. These things are like pressing a reset button and starting fresh.

  1. Be totally honest with yourself. It’s easy to go through life pretending things are “fine.” Being totally honest is an opportunity to reflect on life. The aim is to evaluate the emotions experienced recently. This will help identify whether it’s a phase or whether hating life has been an issue for a long time.
  2. Make a list of what you hate about your life. There is a saying, “The only way out is through.” Listing down things can be uncomfortable, but it will provide greater insight and a better idea on what can be done to change things. Oftentimes, doing the opposite of what a person hates, will start improving things.
  3. Identify your negative triggers. There are things that may be occurring that triggers someone to have negative thoughts about life. This could be being around certain people or doing certain activities. These triggers may be unconscious habits, therefore working with a trained professional can help turn things around.
  4. Focus on your physical health. Anthony Robbins often says, “You don’t feel depression, you do depression.” This means the way a person engages their body makes a huge difference to their mental and emotional states. From a mind-body connection, the healthier a person’s body, the healthier mental state they’ll be in.
  5. Allow yourself to take a break. Sometimes going away somewhere and being in a different environment can help. This should be seen as an opportunity to unplug, reflect and recharge. Time away can help a person identify what they need to change when they return to their normal environment.
